see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tie_(music)

a "tie" is a curved line connecting the heads of two notes of the same pitch and name, indicating that they are to be played as a single note with a duration equal to the sum of the individual notes' note values

    Here is an example:
Say you have two bars of quarter notes (see image) and you want to remove the fifth note and prolong the fourth note into a half note. The fourth note will then be represented by two quarter notes tied together (see image).
To do this, select the fifth note and press backspace or delete. The fifth note is now replaced by a rest. When you press backspace or delete again, the rest is removed and the fourth note is prolonged.
    Hope this helped!

  • Thanks. How do you create a slur ? Where do you find the slur symbol ?

A slur is made by selecting a note, several notes, or a region and then choosing "Add More" -> "Slur" in the toolbar.

A tie is simply a way of showing a longer note spanning over (for example) a barline. This is made by following the instructions in SvenE's answer above (deleting the second note, and the break).

In Hadrians example, deleting the quarter note would create a dotted quarter. This is currently automatic depending on the time signature. We're working on a way to display them as separate, but it is currently not possible.

If you have two notes with a tie, you can right click and choose "Keep together" to display them as one, but not the other way around, yet.
